About these stained glass patterns

Stained glass and counted cross stitch are the same idea in different materials: flat panes of pure colour held apart by dark lines. A chart of a window needs no shading at all, and the black fabric does the work of the lead, so the glass colours sit directly against it and glow.

Rose windows, pointed gothic arches with a moon behind them, roundels holding a moth, a raven, a serpent or a pair of swallows, and a few cathedral-style saints' halos with no saint in them. Ruby, sapphire, emerald, amber and violet, each a single DMC shade.

Whole cross stitch only — no backstitch, since the leading is the bare cloth — with a symbol in every square so the chart prints in black and white, and a floss key with real DMC numbers and skein counts.

Yes. Every chart in this collection is whole cross stitch only — no backstitch, no quarter or three-quarter stitches and no french knots. If you can sew one X over one square of aida you can finish any of them. Every chart is 130 stitches square, finishing at about 9¼ inches on 14-count aida; what varies between them is the number of floss colours.
